Consider the Feijoa


We heard from growers John and Christine from Kindred this week. Maybe you spotted them in the Saturday Mercury? A great read by journalist Gill Vowles  about the "Pastoral Paradise" of Kindred.  When John and Christine decided to retire to the north west from the top end of Australia they took on a property that happened to come with 96 feijoa trees. The feijoa (also known as pineapple guava or guavasteen) is a native of South America, plentiful in New Zealand and - this week - hilbarn fresh produce boxes. While it's a tropical sounding name, the feijoa fruit is harvested in the winter, from May to August.  We expect you'll notice its distinctive aroma as soon as you open your hilbarn box. Eat fresh like kiwifruit, in fruit salads, in jams, chutneys or curries, or substitute for and/or use with apple in baking. Christine suggests using them with apple in a Feijoa & Apple Crumble. Love to hear what you make of this amazingly aroma-ed fruit! Christine also makes Feijoa Jam and Feijoa Chutney (photographed, above) which she sells at markets. We finished the packing evening devouring some of both with a gooey Tassie cheese. Thank you to John and Christine for sharing their bountiful harvest. Delicious!

We're often asked if we deliver fresh produce boxes to remote places in Tasmania or to places interstate.  We've done a lot of research over the past few weeks - sourcing, tasting, weighing, practice-packing... and here is our solution to your requests. We've hand-picked a range of non-perishable local provisions from regional Tasmania that don't require refrigeration until opening or that will live in a pantry. We've called it hilbarn store produce: premium Tasmanian products selected by Hil & Barn to the value of $90 that we will pack carefully and post to wherever you are. Regular postage anywhere in Australia is $20; Express postage is $30. Postage/delivery is free to locals able to collect from one of our Pick Up Points across the State. Frantoio single variety from the Tippogoree Hills, East Tamar Valley. Silver medal winner at the Australian Olive Association national awards 2010 and 2011.

Rhu Bru Compote with Strawberry Coulis 400g
Ready to serve cold over breakfast, added to a crumble, or warmed and served on top of ice cream. Prepared using premium rhubarb from Scottsdale’s famous red soils.

Day Time Food Massif Granola bar (pack of 7) 210g
Toasted and made in Launceston using Tasmanian organic oats and leatherwood honey, and named after Cradle Mountain Park’s Mount Massif. Great for kids' lunches or a bushwalking snack.

Hillwood Berry Farm Blackcurrant Liqueur 375ml

Rhu Bru Rhubarb Relish 290g
Savoury condiment great with meat or used as a dip or glaze, made from Scottsdale rhubarb grown in the north east’s famous red soils.

Pyengana Peppercorn Cheddar 220g
Premium organic farmhouse cheese matured in Cryovac bags for extra creamy texture and ease of posting.  Infused and matured for 3 to 4 months with native peppercorn flavouring.

hilbarn Fruit Boxes Now Available


Lately, we've been asked if we offer hilbarn fruit boxes as healthy eating options in the workplace. Well, because you've asked, we do. Let us know if you would like to order a $20 hilbarn fruit box, consisting of a range of seasonal fruit sourced from local growers, by emailing us at hilbarn@bigpond.com. We are offering this as a weekly option and there is no need to subscribe. Just let us know and pay before 9 pm on a Wednesday for our ordering purposes. The current seasonal selection (a range of eating apples and pears) is photographed above. Delivery to a Pick Up Point is free or $5 to your workplace.
